Don't use Digital Ocean (DO) for production
5 by vfulco2 | 0 comments
TLDR; account locked out suddenly without any follow-up to my inquiries from customer service over 48+ hours. Sadly, I used to love DO for their balanced pricing, range of services, docs, online written material. I thought they were among the best of the best. Long story short, I've had an account with them for roughly 5+ years as I recall, good credit card on file, monthly bill around $20-50, US address. I use a few droplets to run dokku/docker containers for dev and 1 private Google Outline VPN endpoint, only for me. I only ssh into these from non-root and root should be turned off completely (but I'm only a hacker and not a F/T systems person). Not sure if it matters but I don't do anything nefarious on these droplets-- no webscraping, no botnet creation, no crypto mining. I don't know what else would be considered verboten!?! Try to log in with github, won't work and asks for email login. Try to login from there, and it asks for credit card info for "authorization" although the card is the one on file and being charged for so many years. No recourse, and what a crappy way to treat clients even if they are small potatoes in the grand scheme of things. Thankfully I am building a new MVP all on AWS and have my company prod there too running for 5 years. So I don't have to put up with unprofessional dealings and major risks of service interruption. Assume through no fault of your own that you could be shut out of everything. You have been warned.

Ask HN: Best cars without too much digitalization?
38 by gautamcgoel | 29 comments
As we all know, there is a trend in the automotive industry towards ever more digital "features" in cars. Many of these software systems pose privacy risks; many others simply don't work as intended, leading to frustration and trips to the dealership. For those of us who are "old-school" and prefer their cars without fancy digital gimmicks, which cars would you recommend?

What are the best practices for ditching screen time outside work? No Social Media of any type No Streaming anything, no web surfing, no consuming any media that requires a screen (phone, tablet, monitor, TV) What are the alternatives? Out and about, preferably in nature (and not drinking at a bar) Reading a book, the old fashion way with ink on paper). Kindle might be OK, so a tablet, or computing device for reading. Launch HN: Lemonade Finance (YC S21) – Digital Bank for the African Diaspora
18 by ridwan_olalere1 | 5 comments
Hello Hacker News! Rian and I are co-founders of Lemonade Finance ( https://ift.tt/3ypTRlg ). Lemonade is a digital bank for the African diaspora. There are over 20M African immigrants in North America and Europe and the majority are running some form of business back home. We provide multi-currency accounts to help them manage their unique banking needs. Rian and I have worked together over the last several years helping to build African fintechs such as Opay (in Nigeria) and Okash (in Kenya). As directors of operations and finance, we were instrumental in scaling Opay from $0 to $2B monthly transactions. It stood out to us that Africans can pay up to 30% more than the global average to move money abroad, and most African countries are only enabled to receive, and unable to send. Looking further, we discovered that remittance (sending money back home) wasn't enough for the diaspora—a lot of them run one or two businesses back home. There's limited access to African currencies abroad, it's difficult to open and maintain accounts back home, getting money out of Africa is a challenge, and the size and frequency of their transactions is much greater. We issue bank accounts to our users in both their country/currency of origin as well as in their country/currency of residence, and provide them with the tools to manage both their personal and business banking between continents. We integrate and build open banking APIs in the countries we operate, manage floats across countries, and obtain the licensing that enables our users to store or move money across borders. 8 of the 10 fastest growing international migrant populations are African. The African diaspora represents a $10B market opportunity. We launched 10 months ago and are currently processing $5.5M per month and made $23k in monthly revenue in July. We are licensed to provide our services in the US, Canada, and the UK. We are really happy we get to share this with the Hacker news community. Please let us know your thoughts and questions in the comment section below.

Ask HN: Digital Nomads: What's Your Setup?
49 by jrwoodruff | 48 comments
I'm a UX designer, and my wife is a health coach. We recently decided to dip our toes in the digital nomad lifestyle, and took off in our small motor home a few weeks ago. We are loving it so far. The one huge thorn in my side is data caps. Turns out, we're both on zoom calls, a lot. Back home, we've got a fiber connection and it's no big deal. But remote, I burned through my 'unlimited' 15gb hotspot plan with verizon on Tuesday of my first week and got cut to 600mbps (really more like 400) which is pretty rough. I also have a Skyroam Solis, which just might be the most disappointing thing I've purchased in recent memory. The device itself is meh, their app and website are full of typos and other issues, and the actual service has, so far, been slower than my throttled verizon plan - and that's in an area with a ton of cell coverage. And, of course, their 'unlimited' plan is 10gb, which at actual broadband speeds, is damn easy to blow through in a day or two of zoom meetings. Luckily, we have a wifi connection where we are now that pretty consistently pulls down 4-10mbps, so we're ok for now. So - what's your experience been? What equipment are you using? How are you managing your data consumption? If my work consists of video calls and connected tools like G Suite and Figma, is this possible without wifi?
