Ask HN: What are ethical companies like Patagonia and some digital counterparts?
29 by maremmano | 19 comments
Hey HN! I'm on the lookout for companies that stand out in ethical and sustainable practices, much like Patagonia in the retail world. I'm also interested in finding digital and tech companies with a strong commitment to these values. Have you come across any firms in the tech space making noteworthy efforts in sustainability or ethics, perhaps similar to the way Basecamp/Hey has shifted their infrastructure for better environmental impact? (recent switch from Cloud to Rack server) I'm also keen to support physical product companies that are dedicated to ethical manufacturing. Any suggestions or experiences with brands that prioritize this approach would be incredibly helpful. Thanks in advance for sharing your insights and recommendations possibly first-hand experience.

Ask HN: To what extent have digital payments replaced cash in your country?
3 by jn31415 | 3 comments
I've been based in Vietnam for the past few years. This country seems to be relatively slow in adopting digital payment methods (which is just fine by me, btw.). Cash is still accepted anywhere and also still appears to be the most common payment method. When it comes to digital payments, regular bank transfers via bank apps seem to be the most popular option. I take it that the same is the case for other countries in the region, such as Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. But it does make me wonder, how is the situation in other places? Do people in your country still use cash on a daily basis? If not, what is the go-to payment method?

What are your favorite methodologies for organizing digital life
6 by sn0n | 9 comments
Ok, so this is a bit of an odd one, but I'm about to finally attempt to organize 20 years of digital clutter... Before taking off on this endeavor, I want to make sure I have a good system in place for where things go.. I have thousands and thousands of various folders and files, things like projects, music, photos, zip files and other downloads, personal notes, backups, etc.. How do you organize your digital library?

Show HN: My solar-powered, ePaper digital photo frame

This is version 2 of my ongoing heirloom device project, a digital photo frame built with the goal of lasting longer than your typical gadget. There's a part of me that wishes to commercialize a polished version of this product, but the more I speak to people, the more I become convinced that I belong to a very small minority.

Show HN: Neucards – Privacy based digital contact card
6 by bdominy | 0 comments
Neucards is an end-to-end encrypted contact information sharing and updating iOS app that protects your identity while letting you keep in touch with people. I started working on neucards as a side project more than ten years ago, and I decided three years ago to go full-time and try to build a community around it. There are two major problems that neucards addresses. First, most people end up with contact lists that are hopelessly out of date. Over time, people move, change jobs, or add social profiles and unless they tell you, chances are you could lose touch. Second, your contact information ends up in the wrong hands. There has been a huge increase in robocalls, unsolicited emails, data breaches, and online scams that is driven by accessing a person's contact info. Even worse, with AI now being able to imitate a person's voice or other mannerisms, knowledge about the connections you have with others can be used against you. Neucards automatically updates your contact information for anyone who has your digital contact card. You control your contact information and who has access. This is possible because of end-to-end encryption. Neucards brings the same level of protection for your contact information as Signal or WhatsApp does for your chats. Privacy is built it. But, even with these protections, you can share your contact info with anyone. As an example, here is a link to my Social card: https://ift.tt/gkNLPwv... I'm excited about how much neucards has grown and what I have planned for the future to do even more to protect people's privacy. If you have any comments, please let me know. Ask HN: How do you manage your digital footprint in 2023?
5 by ffgh | 5 comments
In the recent months I've become more aware of my digital footprint and have been doing a lot digital spring cleaning. Of course we all know nothing really gets permanently deleted from servers but anything I'm able to remove from the public such as reddit/forums submissions and posts I have been doing so. What I'm currently doing is attempting to sign-in into any website where I supplied my real name, phone number and attempting to change/update it to a different name, remove phone number, billing details (example: LiveNation, Regal Cinemas, Retail stores)
